What is DIN?

DIN (Director Identification Number) as the name spells it defines the identification of director. It is an 8 digit unique number that is allotted to a director, it helps in identifying a director as each unique code represents a director (whether existing or proposed). It holds all the information about the director like name, address, contact details, companies in which he is a director, etc. Once the DIN is allotted then it is valid for a lifetime unless deactivated or canceled. To authenticate the director and avoid frauds the Government of India introduced the concept of DIN. A director can hold one DIN irrespective of companies he is appointed as a director.

Before applying for DIN what documents are required?

To get DIN there are some documents you have scanned copy required to attach with the form DIR-3, the required documents are as follows:

  • One Photograph (high resolution) of the applicant is required in JPEG format.
  • PAN card of the applicant (for Indian applicant) is mandatory for identity, name, father’s name, and date of birth.
  • Passport of the applicant is mandatory as id proof (for foreign nationals)
  • Address proof which is not older than 2 months, you can provide any of the following document:
    • Electricity Bill
    • Telephone Bill
    • Bank account statement
  • You can also use a driving license, voter id card, or passport as an address proof.

Methods for applying DIN: 

There are 2 methods by which you can apply for DIN:

  1. By using SPICe Form:

SPICe (Simplified Proforma for Incorporating a Company) is a form which is used for incorporating a company, while applying for this form there is an option that you can apply for a DIN for 3 directors who do not have a DIN by using the same form.

  1. By using Form DIR-3:

This is a traditional method by which you can apply for DIN. This form DIR-3 is used by the person who is already a director in an existing company.

Steps for applying DIN  through DIR-3:

Step 1:Logon to the website of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) and the go on MCA Services tab then in the drop-down bar go on e-filing and then click on company forms download. 

Step 2: Download the form DIR-3 now and then fill all required details and attach the copy of documents mentioned above (Photograph, Address proof, Identity proof, and signature duly verified).

Step 3:After completing step 2 now you have to sign the documents using the Digital Signature Certificate (DSC). And it is important to have a DSC if you do not have a DSC then first apply and get a DSC then start the process of DIN.

Step 4: The application must be certified by the professional (CA/CS/CMA) in practice and, after the application is filled go to the site and create your id and upload the form.

Step  5: Now you have to make online fees payment and submit the form.  Status of application is checked online and DIN is allotted immediately but it may take up to 2 days.
